Circular No 33

Newsletter for the past alumnae of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 29 of June 2002. Circular No. 33
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear friends now a few lines on my effort to find Anthony Lucky, this was the exchange:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Ladislao,
I have just realised that I did not reply to the question concerning Anthony Lucky. I do not have his email address, but will try to get it and send it to you.
I was at a conference in Edinburgh, Scotland, year before last, and who should appear but Anthony. I had followed his career in the newspapers for the years intervening, but had not seen him since I was a small boy and he was graduating from Form V. He has had a very distinguished career over the years. He is now on the Court of Appeal, the highest local Court of Trinidad and Tobago. I was very happy to reacquaint myself with him and his wife Cintha.
All the best
Don
---------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Don,
I opened your Judge Lucky´s photo.
Is there a possibility with all the protocol, to send an email to Judge Lucky??? Basically to have him know that there is a Web page and inquire if he would like to get further information. Maybe it would be good in eliminating some of his stress??
Let me know what would be your manner to proceed??.
God Bless
Ladislao
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Ladislao,
Anthony Lucky does have an email address and I am sure that he would enjoy reading the newsletters that you circulate. I am forwarding this one to him so that he will get your address and you will have his.
All the best,
Don
------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Don,
I trust that after seeing this reply Ladislao will erase from memory any thought, their that I am some "fuddy duddy ole judge" who is more fussy than the head of protocol about protocol. (smiles) I have been referred to by many lawyers included by many names, some of them rather uncomplimentary (e.g. "the hanging judge", "judge dread", "of heavy sentences" etc ) but as you are aware a good judge does not consider himself to be in a popularity contest but to be fair and impartial. Most important, my wife and four daughters do agree that I am a "very pleasant person" and their opinions are valued. (smiles).
I look forward to the receipt of the newsletters and any other information.
I left the abbey school in December 1956 and went to Presentation college San Fernando where inter alia I won the Victor Ludorum at the annual sports beating their top sprinters and played cricket and football for the college, they had to find some way to make me "their own" rather than "that boy from the Mount", so de facto I became a "Pres Boy" (smiles). It is good to know that I am not an historical footnote in the annals of "the Mount" or a statistic.
May I take this opportunity to congratulate those who took the giant step to rejuvenate and activate a past students association.
With best wishes,
Anthony.

Circular No 32

Caracas, 22 of June 2002. Circular No. 32
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

The following messages were received from: Michael D´ornellas and Robert Lee:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Ladislao,

I got this email from one of my classmates, Robert Lee, who is currently living in Canada. It gives some insight on what he and his family are doing.
Do you have him on your mailing list? He mentions an Abbey website below.
Take Care & God Bless
'Specs '
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Michael,

Wow! Those photos are really a flash from the past. My memory is also fading because I cannot remember all the names. I recognize the faces but I cannot put a name to all. If you see Allan again tell him his e-mail address is bouncing back. Perhaps, I have an incorrect e-mail. How is your son doing in Canada? You were going to put him in touch with me.
I was elected to the education committee of Factors Chain International last week. I will be able to travel to Europe 4 times during the year and at least once to the Orient. The committee of four has a mandate to write 2 manuals this year. One is on running a finance company in the early stages and another on dispute prevention. This should be fun with a Brit, Turk and a Czech on the committee.
PJ my actor son finally got his mug on the silver screen for a couple of seconds in the opening scenes of Denzell Washington movie, John Q. He recently did a solo commercial with a speaking role for "String Cheese" on YTV.
Baseball season is fast approaching.

Robert Lee

PS. Tony did a fabulous job with the Mount web-site!

I have just received the Venezuelan Boys list from the 1970s, and the msb listing is hitting the 750 mark. I have been contacting some of the boys using the phone book and hope to have some information of the 1970 era.
What I find interesting is that outside Judge Lucky and Ian Smart, the alumnae of the 1942 to 1957 are lost. There are no photos and neither names! I would like you to comment on this. Every member of the 1960 graduating class has been found and we are in contact, but where are the other classes??
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SCOUTING OR NO SCOUTING.

There is a lack of news on scouting activity, I cannot believe that this activity did not leave a mark on its members. How about the yearly trek to the North coast, for those wanting the badge, maybe someone can tell me the badge´s name??
Who were the Queen´s Scouts??? What did they do?? I cannot believe that all of you threw the badges away as something without value!!! What about the structures that were build for the annual competition??? Against whom??
I can write about the scouts as I saw them from the outside but that is not fair, I cannot conceive that the continuous practice, flag waving, construction, cooking delicious chicken, making dozens of knots, memorizing booklets, wonderful camping, sightseeing trips by WV bus, taking the oath and Fr. Ildefons tutoring, did not make a story.
I still have my Lifesaving medallion and cross and buy badges for both, for use in my bathing suit??? when they get old!! it helps to create conversation with children and friends.

Circular No 31

Caracas, 15 of June 2002. Circular No. 31
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends, Alumnae of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict
The following message was received from: Michael Dórnellas
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello Ladislao,
Thank you for your email and I am pleased you and many of the old boys enjoyed the pictures (season’s play). Thank you for acknowledging the source of the photos, however it was not important to do so. Therefore , there was no need for you to apologize.
I sent you an email some time ago with all my contact numbers, any way I will give you again. Home (868) 673-3452 Work ...(868) 673-3447.
As soon as I have I will photo copy the Mount Inside's that I have in my possession. First I have to find them... that's the big problem.
As I mentioned in a previous email.... I do not have any information on the scout photo I sent you. My memory is BLANK with that one. I will be visiting Fr. Cuthbert soon and I should get some info from him . If I do, I will put together an article for you. Actually, I visited the Mount on Easter Saturday in the hope of meeting Fr. Cuthbert. Unfortunately, I met no one. I may return to day.
Kurt Allen, better known as 'Puggy ', phoned me about two weeks ago. He is planning a OLD BOYS REUNION at the ABBEY SCHOOL some time this year. We will notify the old boys via phone, email, fax and the daily newspapers. As soon as I receive more details I will forward the information to you. Unfortunately, I do not have any contact numbers for Kurt. During our last phone conversation he promised to call me at home the same night ......... would you believe my phone went dead...... Kurt may have called ..... So now I have to wait until he calls me to get the contact info.
The first circular I received from you was circular # 9 and I have received everyone ever since. My favourite was the article on Fr. Benedict 'Voosh' by Nigel Boos. I enjoyed it immensely. Nigel captured Fr. Benedict perfectly.
When will the Abbey web site be completed? (it evolving every month)
I am going to be very busy with my work for about 3 more months. Once I have sometime to myself, I will assist with some articles and information.
I would like to personally thank you for all that you have done and continue to do to get your circulars out to us and for just keeping us all together.
I have to close now....
Michael Dórnellas
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please look at a recent photo of Michael and son.
I have included this belatedly message because I am trying to change the format a bit by letting you write your impressions on the circular, events form memory and your visits to the Mount, those that live in TT. I hope Michael does not mind my using his lines.
I have additional messages for you, alumnae, that I shall publish in the next few weeks. Meanwhile I am preparing something that you might like, on personal experiences.

Circular No 30

Newsletter for the alumnae of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 8 of June 2002. Circular No. 30
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,
The following message was received from: Richard de Verteuil:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You are doing a sterling job, Ladislao, keep it up. I was at the Mount in 1949, 50 and 51 and well remember the priests you talk about. I often wonder what happened to some of the lay masters like Mr. Achong. My favourite teacher was Fr. Peter, whose favourite expression was, "Ya now, boys, be good ". He taught French and was a very gentle and soft spoken priest.
I also remember Fr. Chrys in whose dorm I spent a couple of years. He was a tyrant and a bully as I recall. Liked nothing better than making the boys kneel down for hours on end and confiscating marbles whenever he got a bit short. He had a large sweet jar in which he kept them. He was a prolific marbles player and made up the rules as he went along! I remember some 50 and 100 kiao(!) games he played, using a ball bearing instead of a marble. That was so it was more difficult to 'farts'! I must say though that he was quite accurate.
I also remember tops season. I once had a purple heart top which my Dad had turned for me in the company’s machine shop. It was a wickedly heavy device and I had to blunt the nail on which it spun to prevent it from boring through my hand as I carried it along spinning. Unfortunately I do not have any photographs of Mount. I wish I had now. It was not until about three years later that I took up the hobby and used to do all my own processing at my next school, Stonyhurst College in Lancashire, England. There I had a good friend in the Jesuit who was the school photographer and he let me use the darkroom. I continued for many years until colour slides became too much of a bother and then I took up other hobbies.
Must dash.
Cheers for now,
Richard de Verteuil (Roger Henderson is my cousin! - if he is from Pointe a Pierre)

I am glad that some of you are writing these long remembrances, I appreciate those that write longer than I do. I have made up a rule for me to follow, if the writing is one page long then it is enough. Since this paragraph completes the page, I must go and must keep you in suspense until next week when our guest will be…………???
God Bless

Circular No 29

Caracas, 2 of June 2002. Circular No. 29

Dear Friends,
You read last week an article by Anthony Milne on the “Abbey library needs help”.
Now it is my time to get hold of your attention, get hold of your chair!!! I am going to rival the Trinidad Express´s journalist. Watch out Pulitzer!! An engineer is about to???
You might not believe me but I never saw this library, it has taken me 40+ years to find this out, can anyone help me to locate it??? Where was it in (1960) or is in (2002) the Library must be big??? Since there is only one computer at the Mount, then this is where it is located, because to track all the books, it is a big job. I wonder if Don Mitchell saw it in his last visit?
The only library that I knew for good or bad was on the first floor of the school, situated over the driveway. This library was below the washroom of the dorms.
Why I say bad or good, notice that I changed the order!!! It was because when we reached Form I we were required to read one book per month, if not we were penalized.
This was the bad part as many of us, strike out the bookworms, did not like to read and saw this as a punishment.
At the beginning a lot of us just borrowed and returned the book, just formalism, until Fr. Bernard asked part of the contents, he always knew the contents of all the books of the library, so we were admonished and this time you had to start the reading and of course finish it or be prepared for a poor English mark.
So you could not just borrow a book and return it at the end of the month, but you had to read it. I do not know if we invented speed reading, the Kennedys made it popular in the 1960s, but nobody mentioned us.
The Guns of Navarone?? H.M.S.Ulysses?? Any one remembers??? Maybe I did not write the title as it should be, but at least I remember two of the books that I read, of course no memory of the author, H.M.S. Ulysses had a blue cover?? By the way the Guns of Navarone was a good movie later on!! Anthony Quinn and the lot. Was there a movie on the other book???
The good part was that it gave us the knowledge that we have used in reaching our objectives, thanks to Fr. Bernard´s and Fr. Gerome´s insistence, we became what we are as this helped our education.
As a challenge I am going to make a trip to Trinidad and find this library, never is too late. Maybe I am going to ask Anthony Milne??? I am sure he did a lot of research on it!!
This trip is going to be around August, September, maybe two weeks before classes officially start at the island.
I need your help with this trip, to be able to gather sufficient information for circular No. 40 and on!!!! Just look at the number on this circular and you can safely bet on No. 52 sometime in November.
